Taking a Break

This was a great weekend that left little time for writing, and the time I did have I spent watching Squid Game. For those who can stomach the bleakness and violence of it, the show is pretty awesome.

Below are some of my favorite pieces from this week – I’ll be back next Sunday with something more meaty.

It Is Obscene: A True Reflection in Three Parts – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
“I have spoken to young people who tell me they are terrified to tweet anything, that they read and re-read their tweets because they fear they will be attacked by their own. The assumption of good faith is dead. What matters is not goodness but the appearance of goodness. We are no longer human beings. We are now angels jostling to out-angel one another. God help us. It is obscene.”

Fifteen Ways to Overcome the Fear That’s Killing Your Potential – Ryan Holiday
“We must break fear down logically. Go to the root of it. Explain it. Tell yourself: It’s just money. It’s just a bad article. It’s just a meeting with people yelling at one another. Is that something you need to be afraid of?”

Sympathy & Empathy – Robert Glazer
“While empathy is about stepping into someone’s shoes, compassion, as Bloom shared in an interview, is, ‘a feeling of concern for another person’s suffering which is accompanied by the motivation to help.’ The key distinction is that being compassionate does not require you to share the other person’s feelings or state of mind.”

What It Felt Like to Run 50 Miles – Paul Flannery
“Finally, I get to a clearing and a chance to run downhill. I notice again that I have a lot of legs left and now I’m flying. I cruise through a field where the race photographer has set up shop and I take my hair down because, brother, believe me when I tell you that I am feeling it now.”
