Father’s Day

In honor of Father’s Day, I’m reposting two essays from the early days of this website. I’ve got some awesome men in my life, and could do more in the way of appreciation. But that’s what these parent holidays are for, right? Penitence for the crap you’ve put them through in the preceding 365 days, and to repay any remaining debts from the middle school years.

What I’m Reading:

The Lindy Way of Living – Ezra Marcus, NYT
“Of course, the Lindy effect doesn’t work in every domain; if you are diagnosed with cancer, seek chemotherapy, Mr. Skallas said, rather than relying on Roman medical practices. He thinks Lindy is more useful when it comes to skepticism of industrial-age consumables, like mouthwash or processed seed oils, and faddish social science, like the debunked Myers-Briggs test.”

Farewell, Millennial Lifestyle Subsidy – Kevin Roose, NYT
“Profits are good for investors, of course. And while it’s painful to pay subsidy-free prices for our extravagances, there’s also a certain justice to it. Hiring a private driver to shuttle you across Los Angeles during rush hour should cost more than $16, if everyone in that transaction is being fairly compensated.”
